The word Yoga comes from an ancient script called Sanskrit. Its root word yuj means ‘to unite’ or ‘to yoke’, and the goal of yoga is to help us become aware of the fragmentary nature of our existence and to reunite with our authentic selves. We do this through a combination of mindful movement and movement with breath, which are really one and the same. A Yoga class is a sequence of movements designed to cover the full range of human movement and is often done in time with the breath. This ‘movement with breath’ is called a vinyasa [which means ‘to place in a certain way with a certain breath’] and is one of the more popular styles of yoga these days, it is also one of the styles of yoga that we deliver at Primal HQ in Camberwell with the purpose of it being to bring awareness to the breath, to the body and to the stillness behind the fragmentation of the mind.
Yoga was originally taught in one on one private sessions with a teacher [or guru] giving asanas [or postures] specifically for the individual student. Every body is slightly different and each of us have different needs when it comes to our yoga practice. A private yoga sessions allows the teacher to identify the students specific physiological needs and prescribe asanas, or postures, to either open or strengthen specific areas of the students bodies according to their needs. By individually coaching the yoga student there can be more emphasis on breath with movement, mindfulness, and specific corrective movements and practices as well as homework in the way of a daily practice that the student then take away with them.
Our Beginners Yoga classes are for beginner students and are designed for general populations. It is a slow vinyasa flow yoga class meaning that the sequence of postures is done in time with the breath. This means you may hear verbal queues such as ‘on your next inhalation raise your arms overhead, and on your exhalation take your hands through heart centre and fold forward to touch the floor with your finger tips‘. These classes are designed to flow smoothly, and slowly, from one posture to the next meaning that they are a good beginners class for anyone that has never done yoga before.
Yin Yoga is a slower and more meditative stretching style of yoga. Postures in Yin Yoga are held for three to five minutes and sometimes longer. The focus is on working deep into the deeper layers of connective tissue to remove dysfunctional myofascial tightness and restore proper function to the muscles and connective tissue. Yin [the word] can be described as surrender, acceptance, or yielding and this really explains what the Yin classes are about. Rather than trying to force shapes [which is a yang characteristic] in Yin Yoga the emphasis is on accepting where you are, on surrendering to the moment and letting gravity pull you into the pose.
