A style of yoga where you may only practice 6 to 8 poses or asana during the class. Each pose or asana is held for a minimum of 90 seconds to 3 minutes. Most of the class is performed on the floor with lots of bolsters and cushions to prop you up. Yin yoga is great for clearing your mind, it is meditative and slow, although you work hard at the same time. Yin is fantastic for your connective tissues, ligaments, bones and joints.
The room is heated to between 25 to 27 degrees, keeping your body and muscles warm, and giving you a light sweat during the class. Warm yoga works through some more challenging poses, such as hand stands and different types of balances. These types of poses we find difficult in our heads, and once we have practised them a few times, they become not so challenging. This class can be as strong as you want to make it, although you will feel like you have had a good stretch and workout at the end.
The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word yuj, which means to unify. This origin of the word yoga and the practice of yoga are closely related, since practicing yoga involves seeking to unite your body, mind and spirit. Through a Power yoga practice we learn to engage our breath and movement so it becomes a strong, flowing moving meditation encouraging a sense of contentment and tranquility. Join us for a strong, powerful practice to connect with your true self as well as give your body a fantastic, strengthening workout.
Yoga Flow focuses on the relationship between the movement and breath. The breath is seen as a tool which allows the mind to become still and focused, while movement acts as a purifier for the body by building internal heat tapas, and with each unique asana or pose providing a benefit or release for the body. Students are guided through a balance sequence of sun salutations, a variety of standing and seated postures, pranayama, and deep relaxation techniques. By the aid of creative imagery, demonstrations, verbal adjustments and assisted adjustments students are presented with in depth explanations which help guide them into correct alignment. We focus on encouraging all students to work to their own level and provide a range of stages in eachasana, encouraging a practice which is right for the individual.
Barre is a total body workout that incorporates a ballet barre for several of the exercises. The technique was created by Russian ballet dancer; Lotte Berk in the late 1930s. After injuring her back, Lotte got the idea of combining her ballet bar routines with her rehabilitative therapy to form an exercise system that is one of the fastest growing exercise trends in the country. Its popularity is driven by those wanting to achieve a dancer's physique and strength - without tutus and ballet slippers. Low impact ballet barre inspired training is a great way to develop lean muscle mass while improving balance, flexibility, and range of motion by combining the muscle-shaping principles of isometrics and the body-elongating practice of dance conditioning. Our one hour Barre classes integrate the fat-burning format of interval training with muscle-shaping isometrics to quickly and safely reshape the entire body by using both the ballet barre and the mat. Barre workouts are great fun, the music is loud and workout also requires mental focus as muscles are strengthened and then stretched to create a longer, leaner physique. The result is the recognisable Barre body, featuring sculpted arms, flat abs, a lifted seat, and elongated thigh. As with most classes at Yoga-me, you are welcome to join in if you are a beginner, experienced, young, old, fit or out of shape the class is adapted to your needs.
Pilates or the Pilates method is a series of over 500 mat or equipment based exercises inspired by calisthenics, yoga and ballet. Pilates improves flexibility, strength, balance and body awareness. It was introduced into America in the 1920 by physical trainer Joseph Pilates as a way to help injured athletes and dancers safely return to exercise and maintain their fitness. Pilates can be an aerobic and non-aerobic form of exercise. It requires concentration and focus, because the body is moved through through a slow, sustained series of exercises using abdominal control and proper breathing. Pilates caters for everyone, from the beginner to the advanced. You can perform exercises using your own body weight, or with the aid of various pieces of equipment to increase core and overall strength, sculpt the body, help bring back your pre-baby body, tone problem areas, improve posture and bolster your energy levels.
Beginner classes are suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels who are new to yoga, beginners wanting to learn more before they try different styles of yoga, or those looking at getting back into yoga after a break. Flexibility, fitness and co-ordination are not needed to begin yoga - these are in fact some of the many benefits you can expect with a consistent practice. These classes are light hearted, caring and nurturing, and our teachers happily help with verbal and assisted-adjustments to ensure you learn the right way, at your own pace. All equipment is supplied - wear comfortable clothing trackies and a loose top is ideal, and bring a water bottle and a towel if needed.
