Osteopath Information

What is Osteopathy?

How nice it would be to not have to take any form of medicinal drugs to treat a certain condition? It is no secret that many of us wonder what those chemicals could do to our bodies, apart from healing the targeted tissues. The side effects of prescription drugs scare many who would like to find an alternate way of healing themselves. This is what osteopathy is – an alternate medicine which does not just focus on healing the targeted areas of the body but to enhance its overall health. The medicinal treatment focuses on the manipulation of the musculoskeletal system to strengthen it and is a holistic approach to improving the body's health. A treated musculoskeletal framework will then affect the body's nervous, circulatory, and lymphatic systems as well.

An osteopath is someone who has the legal license to practice osteopathy. In Australia, an osteopath is required to have studied for at least five years in the fields of anatomy, physiology, pathology, general medicinal treatment, and osteopathic techniques. Osteopaths in Australia work in private practice and their treatment is usually covered by private health insurance schemes. Osteopathic treatments are also covered by the public health care system in Australia under the Chronic Disease Management plan. Osteopathy Australia, which started off as Australian Osteopathic Association in 1955, is a national level organisation ensuring the right to practice osteopathy and people's right to have access to osteopathic treatments.

Osteopathy can treat numerous diseases. While many people would think that the osteopathic approach of manipulating the musculoskeletal framework is only helpful in treating conditions of the muscles and joints but osteopaths can also treat a wide array of other types of diseases as well. Digestive ailments and respiratory diseases can be treated by osteopathic practices. Other common conditions for which people approach an osteopath are arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, head ache, back ache, and shin splints.

Osteopathy has many benefits and creates many positive changes in the body. Since the treatments dismiss the use of external drugs and substances to treat the body and restore its health, osteopathy, in its essence, respects the natural recovery of the body and keeps it clean of all kinds of toxins. Osteopathy, contrary to the popular belief, is not a preventive measure but a treatment which is introduced only when there is any kind of discomfort. It is great for the joints and muscles and makes them more flexible and mobile but at the same time, the musculoskeletal framework is not all that gets the benefits.

Osteopathy treatments have highly positive effects on the nervous, circulatory as well as the lymphatic system of the body. There are several osteopathic techniques which address the lymphatic system and these are very beneficial for the body since the lymphatic system is responsible for the immunity of the body. Osteopathy also improves the sleep pattern of the body and improves its state.
